Setting up an Admin workstation Return to IT/SA Services Documentation: Active Directory |
FWIW:
You may just want to use one of Wayne's ICC Management Station VMs at http://virtual.ifas.ufl.edu as those already have the RSAT tools and more. If you use one of those VMs and want to make a custom console as described below you will need to save it to a location that both your GL and your IF-ADMN credentials have access...such as your user folder on the IFAS file server. That said...
Requirements:
- Fully patched Windows 7 SP1 machine
- System logged in as Gatorlink user
- IF-ADMN-Gatorlink and IF-ADML-Gatorlink accounts created (if not, email ". IFAS-ITNS LAN Systems")
Install the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1):
- Download and install the appropriate file (32-bit or 64-bit depending on what platform you are running) from here
- Follow carefully the instructions on that site
Set up a custom "UFAD" MMC Console
- Use Windows key-R to bring up the run menu
- Type "mmc" and press Enter, elevating to your "if-admn" credentials when prompted
- Select the desired snap-ins one-at-a-time, clicking Add after each
- Depending on need, the suggested snaps may include the following (and more)...
- Active Directory Users and Computers
- Group Policy Management
- DHCP
- Printer Management (use if-srvv-print for campus or your local MPS)
- etc.
- When all the snap-ins you want are added, click the OK button.
- For the DHCP plug-in you will have to right-click and "Add server" and select an appropriate authorized server
- Once you have things as you want them, use the File > Save As menu
- Type UFAD.msc in the File name field
- Save it to your GL profile's desktop (or some other location accessible to both your GL and if-admn account)
- You can always change things and resave later should you wish to make alterations in your custom console
Pin to taskbar and run
- Drag the file from your desktop (or wherever you saved it) to the taskbar to pin it
- Click pinned shortcut to run...elevate to your IF-ADMN credentials and off you go...
