Recommendation for handling SPAM at the server level:

  • Status: approved by ICC on 10/9/03

IFAS ITNS should take the necessary steps to analyze incoming email and delete all messages that use forged headers, are virus infected, or originate from addresses that are on known good blacklists. In addition, certain high valued Bayesian scored emails, including those with particularly suspect subject lines and messages containing obviously offensive keywords will be deleted. All remaining messages will be tagged in the subject line as likely SPAM and will be forwarded to the end user for further handling. The process for white-listing individual addresses should be well documented and advertised so as to handle individual situations and needs that will arise. It is recognized that monitoring and tweaking of this process will be an ongoing effort, with the goal of reducing the SPAM load while incurring as few false positives as possible.

    Dissent: None.
